Helping Schools Build Thriving Learning Communities

About
I didn’t always feel like I belonged in school.

As a student, I sometimes struggled to connect—with the adults in the room, with other learners, and with the way school was structured. I often wished there was more than one teacher to learn from, more than one space to be seen. I didn’t have the language for it then, but what I longed for was a learning community.

Years later, as an educator and parent, I experienced exactly that. In a small international school in Indonesia, I co-taught both of my sons in a tightly connected team of teachers and teaching assistants. We re-grouped regularly based on what our students needed. We shared responsibility for every learner. We built flexibility into our days—and belonging into our classrooms. We were, in every sense, a hive.

And once you’ve taught in a hive, you can’t go back.

After leading and teaching in learning community models across multiple international schools, I’ve realized something essential: I can no longer be both a teacher and a system builder. To truly scale this model—and help others avoid the painful missteps I’ve seen—I’ve stepped outside the classroom to do the work from the outside in.

That’s why I created The Hive: to support schools and educators in reimagining how we teach, lead, and learn together.

Why “The Hive”?
Nature gives us one of the best metaphors for thriving learning communities: the beehive. Each part of a hive works toward a shared purpose—interdependent, fluid, sustainable. And that’s exactly what strong schools should feel like.

-
Interdependence & Collective Purpose
Every bee plays a role that strengthens the whole. In a learning community, students and teachers share ownership of learning and well-being. -
Decentralized, Yet Coordinated
A hive isn’t top-down. It responds to real-time needs through signals and collaboration. In schools, leadership is shared and learning is co-created. -
Fluid Structure
Bees move where they’re needed. Students in learning communities move between spaces, roles, and groups based on task, interest, and growth. -
Purposeful Communication
Bees communicate with precision. In learning communities, intentional dialogue—circles, protocols, student-led feedback—is key. -
Sustainable & Regenerative
Hives last. So do strong communities. We’re building systems where self-regulation, empathy, and resilience are taught—not just expected.

The Hive is a space for schools, leaders, and teachers ready to do this work. Whether you're launching a pilot or deepening your practice, you're not alone. I’m here to help you build, adapt, and thrive—just like the hives I’ve been lucky enough to teach in.

Welcome to The Hive.
Let’s reimagine school—together.
